If you have taken the time to read the reviews about this wonderful piano learning course by teacher, composer, and international recording artist, Laura Sullivan, you know it is beneficial to children. However, if you are an older person who has never taken lessons (or someone who has taken many years ago and wants to start anew with Laura as your teacher), then BORN VIRTUOSOS - Level 1 is for you as well.

But, it doesn't stop with teaching you how to play the piano. It also guides you through theory and helps you to compose your first tune, assuming you've never composed before. This is an amazing piano course. I've never seen anything like it. It's great for children, but it is also great for the "child" within the adult. And...you are never too old. If my mother can START learning piano in her 80's...what are you waiting for?!

Born Virtuosos Learn to Play Piano for Kids Book CD Sold as Set Laura Sullivan 9781427651549 Books Reviews

My 6 year old son just started piano and has needed a primer for sometime. After seeing what is out there and encountering frustration with the piano book that his teacher recommended, I got the Born Virtuosos book. My son instantly took to the story telling format at the beginning of the book and came to me to show off how much he had learned in a short period of time. I also appreciated the checklists for reps and space for notes. It really helped motivate my son to continual practice. For each rep he was able to get a check mark, I was able to reward him with an M&M for each rep. It helped him be excited to learn piano. Thanks to Laura for this book, I will continue to use it to teach my other children.
Ever wonder how Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart "discovered" his love for music at such a young age? It helps when your father is an accomplished music teacher/composer and you have an older sister who is learning the keyboard. Exposure. Joy. Exploration. Opportunity. Laura's book helps level the playing field for the rest of us who didn't have Leopold Mozart as our father.
Laura Sullivan packages three methods of learning within her Born Virtuosos, including the ear training that Suzuki so successfully utilizes. Even though I began playing the piano at age 4, I didn't learn to rapidly sightread until I accompanied beginning voice students in college. In a state of panic with a wide-eyed vocalist staring at me, I fervently wish I'd practiced that skill at an earlier age. Laura introduces sightreading as early as Stage 2. On behalf of the musicians who will benefit from your book, Laura, we thank you for that! It made me smile to see the original composition pages at the back of the book. They are just begging to be filled with your child's first masterpieces. Her book presents music methodically (although your child won't recognize this) and carefully. Because it gradually builds skills, Laura's compositions don't seem overwhelming. Theory principles, which can become an "eye rolling" chore, are deftly inserted throughout the course. The tone of this book is engaging and fun, which children need. I also like it that the child can notate their progress. Admit it - you still like to get a gold star. Kids like to visually see their progress as well.
I just received an advance caopy of this title, and am very impressed. The learning approach is almost subversive in that the child gets to start making music right away, and then the theory is put in place once the head and hands have absorbed what they need. And the actual keyboard training is supplemented with non-keyboard elements to keep youngsters engaged with a variety of activities. Rote learning is sprinkled throughout, but does not appear to be dogmatic. Theory like key, time, and rhythm are brought in after the child has been able to get a handle on what a piece should sound, often times by mimicking natural English language (so I'm not sure how this translates to other tongues). This mnemonic technique is usually only brought out for complex signatures or rhythms, but Mrs. Sullivan introduces it early on.

The material progresses at a reasonably steady pace, and gives the instructor quite a bit of liberty in handling individual students. There is an inherent goals system which helps kids track achievements, which are reasonably challenging. One thing I've learned in many years of various kinds of instruction is to engender a true sense of accomplishment in students early on, and give them a taste for what it will feel like at the next goal. If someone is ever inclined to enjoy learning something new, this is the way to get them there and help that enjoyment last.

Another sneaky element is that ear training happens alongside the actual finger and reading exercises. The student is given a variety of pieces that range in style and modal influence. This helps build an appreciation for intervals beyond major and minor scales. Instead of going through scale after scale with different patterns, the music includes accidentals at a good rate, and moves into jazz and blues without hammering a "new" scale. I've seen many adults struggle with hearing intervals and chords because they just never learned these elements in context.

I believe Laura has written or arranged every piece in the book, and in doing so has taken great care in the progression. By the end, the student is beginning to appreciate complexity not only in fingering but in listening. I have not yet fired up the included CD, but the introduction to the book explains the material is there not just to play along with, but to actually listen to. This is a powerful approach to reinforcement and encouragement. If it shows the same care as the written material, it can only be a winner.

So, there are some things left out of this work. Namely, physical technique. There are note on fingering and style here and there, but Mrs. Sullivan has wisely left that up to the competence of the instructor. She is also insistent that the instructor and student do not 'cheat' by writing note names or other hints on the pages, so the student is able to work through being comfortable at site reading. I think these are great decisions, and again gives the teacher lots of flexibility.

You also won't find the standard exercises for pedal work or keyboard - this book focuses almost entirely on making music, plain and simple. 'Born Virtuosos, Level 1' is aimed squarely at young beginners, and as such helps get kids into the right frame of mind for piano lessons - playing music. When someone sits at a keyboard, they should be interested in expressing themselves, telling stories, drawing in the listener. This is the foundation for that artistry.
